Chapter 21

Thursday, February 19

I’d been a bit hasty in telling everyone to gear up, as we still needed to confirm the Reaper and J-Dog were actually hiding out at Florence’s house. Not wanting to pull a Moose the Bounty Hunter and storm the wrong place, I had Blue use the shadows to spy on it.

Thankfully, Blue established that we had the right location. It was then that we realized we had a couple of problems. First, Florence could quickly become a hostage if things went badly during the takedown. Second, fighting the Reaper with his extreme strength inside a confined space was a very bad idea.

As they were hiding and not going anywhere in the immediate future, Blue suggested we slow down and make a plan.

Within minutes, Blue used the shadows and a whiteboard in the office to sketch out the floor plan of the basement, the main and upper levels of the house, as well as an external outline of the house, its position in the neighborhood, and nearby houses. She marked where Florence, J-Dog, and the Reaper had been watching TV on the main level of the house.

We then stood around and tossed out ideas on how we were going to do this. My first priority was to rescue Florence from the house and take her out of play as a hostage or possible casualty. We needed to somehow isolate her from the other two to do this.

After some debate, Blue pointed out that there was a large enough shadow in the powder room on the main level for her to grab Florence. The timing would be tricky, as shadows were created by a small nightlight and would be dispelled the moment the main light in the bathroom was turned on. Blue would need to grab her before she turned on that light, but she believed it was doable.

This led to the second part of our plan. Our theory was that when she didn’t return from her bathroom break or the moment she was taken, J-Dog would realize that she was no longer under his influence. We hoped that this might cause them to panic and search for her. It wouldn’t take them long to search the house and find it empty. At that point, they would either leave the house to look for her or vacate the house in fear that their hideout had been compromised.

Our plan was for me to fly above the house, and the moment the Reaper stepped outside, I’d fry him with lightning to knock him out and then deal with J-Dog the same way. Stella and Blue, after grabbing Florence, would take up a position in the backyard in case they came out the back way or split up and one came out the front and one went out the back. In all scenarios, my main responsibility was covering the front entrance.

Cynthia, Bree, Liv, and Alteea would stay at home and take care of Florence.

“Why can’t Bree and I go?” asked Liv.

“Because I don’t want any of you near the Reaper,” I said.
